Tourism Authority of Thailand update on the current situation for tourists in Bangkok

Dec 11, 2013

The ongoing anti-government demonstrations in Bangkok have been peaceful and are contained within one area in the city’s historic and government quarter. As of today, the demonstrators’ main stages are at Phitsanulok Road and Nang Lerng Junction near Government House and Democracy Monument on Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue. Tourist attractions and activities in Bangkok are open and operating as per normal, but tourists are advised to be vigilant and avoid areas where crowds may gather. It should be stressed that tourists have not been targeted in the ongoing political demonstrations. International and domestic airlines are operating flights between Bangkok and Thai cities, as well as destinations around the world, as per normal. Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang International Airports in Bangkok, as well as other local and international airports throughout the country, are open and operating as usual. All means of city transportation are open and operating as per normal, including BMTA bus and van, BTS skytrain, MRT subway, Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link’s express and city lines, water-transport (ferries, boats, long-tailed boats and hotels’ converted rice barge cruises), and taxi.

Bangkok to experience exodus over long weekend before Songkran

April 2012
Many in the public sector, government, banks and commercial services, can look forward to an extra day off prior to Thailand’s traditional New Year event. The four-day weekend will see banks closed on Monday.
The Thai government announced earlier this year that that April 9  would be a public holiday to allow people to greave and pay their final respects for HRH Bejaratana Rajasuda.
The Princess, who died on July 27 last year, is the first cousin of Thailand’s King Bhumibol and the only daughter of King Vajiravudh. She will be laid to rest at a Sanam Luang ceremonial ground on Monday.
April 6 is also a public holiday to commemorate the nine kings Chakri Dynasty kings that have ruled the nation.  The Chakri Dynasty dates back to the same time Bangkok was founded in the late 1700s, with HRH King Bhumibol the current and msot recent in the list of Chakri royals, known as Rama 9.
King Bhumibol is also the inspiration for the change of slogan by tourism chiefs from ‘Amazing Thailand’ to ‘Miracle Year Thailand. A whole year has been dedicated to celebrating the world’s longest reigning monarch, who celebrated his 84th birthday on December 5, last year.
Following the four day holiday that finishes on April 9, Thais will get a further four days break to celebrate Songkran, Thailand’s New Year of 2555.
The coming four days will see a rather quiet Bangkok, as many Thais leave the city and participate in some travelling before heading back to the capital to visit relatives, attend the lcoal temple and join the world’s biggest water fight.

Tourism authorities won’t give up on Southern Thailand

The authority is keen to move on from last Saturday’s blast and restore tourist confidence in the region.
Urgent talks will be held between the TAT and local tourism operators throughout Thailand’s south to discuss plans for the Songkran celebrations.
As the largest city in Southern Thailand, Hat Yai plays host to some major sporting and tourism events throughout the month of April.  The 2012 Hat Yai Tennis Championship will take place from April 6 to 8, followed by the this year’s TAT Golf Challenge on April 28.
Biking for Tourism will also take place in four southern provinces (Phatthalung-Trang-Satun-Songkhla) from April 28 to May 1.

“We will kick off marketing campaigns immediately to rebuild the tourist image and confidence of this area, especially among Malaysian and Singaporean visitors,” said Mr Surapol.
To further build confidence with travellers, the TAT has also said that familiarisation trips to the region would be organised for members of Malaysia and Singapore’s tourism sector and travel media.
Malaysia, Singapore and the UK issued travel advisories on April 1, advising their citizens to reconsider travel in the southern border provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Songkhla.

Sleep Box

Sleep Boxes are small cubicle spaces that are available at public places like Airports, train stations etc where people can book the ‘box’ for set time period to catch some sleep. It offers a small resting space while you wait for that connection in few hours. Ofcourse it doesnt come with attached washroom…you can use a public one for that.
